International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8th at Vickram College of Engineering. First commemorated by the United Nations (UN) on March 8th during the International Women’s Year of 1975, the day represents an important opportunity for individuals, communities, and countries to celebrate the progress, great achievements, and contributions of women, raise and confront difficult questions and challenges, build broad support for women’s rights, and work towards the full and equal participation of women within all areas of society. Ms.Pritima, Department of Mechanical Engineering, welcomed the gathering. The lively program, organized by female staff and students, featured a wide variety of events, including music in several languages, a picture slide show, short games, dance and poetry readings. Dr. Indra Mercy, Department of English, suggested that, “women should be appreciated, supported, and encouraged...we should empower them and hear their voice. He said that Hydrogen has been claimed to be a good alternative to replace fossil fuel since the 1970s. But hydrogen’s potential has not been realized even partially mainly because of storage and commercial production difficulties. There have been research being done on renewable energy sources like hydrogen for quite some years. He explained about the new methods for storing hydrogen. And he concluded his session by saying that Hydrogen is a strong contender to the generation-next clean and green fuel. And on the next session Er.N.Siva Subramanian,Senior Scientist, Former CGM/ISRO spoke on length on the topic Solar as a Renewable source. He said that Solar energy is a renewable free source of energy that is sustainable and totally inexhaustible, unlike fossil fuels that are finite. It is also a non-polluting source of energy and it does not emit any greenhouse gases when producing electricity.

The second day program started with the technical session. M.P.Nazar, Managing Director, Tantech Engineering Services gave a detailed lecture on Wind power as renewable source and continued with Erection of solar power plants. He said that it is a renewable resource which is non-polluting and renewable, wind turbines create power without using fossil fuels, without producing greenhouse gases or radioactive or toxic waste. Wind power is one of the best ways to combat global warming. In the next session he gave a demo on solar panel assembly & testing.
