National Level Seminar on Awareness on Sustainable Development of Non-Conventional Energy Sources

Vickram College of Engineering in association with The Institution of Engineers, Madurai Local Centre organised a 2-day National level Seminar on Awareness on Sustainable Development of Non-Conventional Energy Sources on 24th and 25th February 2017. The program began with invocation. Dr.S.NAGARAJAN, Principal, Vickram College of Engineering welcomed the gathering. Shri.S.R.VIJAY SHRENIVAS, Managing Director, Vickram College of Engineering gave the felicitation address and honoured the dignitaries. Dr.A.Yasodai, Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, introduced the theme of the seminar. Er. K.VIJAYAKUMAR, Chairman, IEI, Madurai Local Centre delivered the presidential address. Padmashri Er. V. GNANA GANDHI, Former Associate Director, LPS, ISRO submitted the inaugural address. And the program was adjourned for Technical activities.

Padmashri Er. V. GNANA GANDHI, Former Associate Director, LPS, ISRO gave a detailed lecture on the topic Hydrogen as a Renewable source. He said that Hydrogen has been claimed to be a good alternative to replace fossil fuel since the 1970s. But hydrogen’s potential has not been realized even partially mainly because of storage and commercial production difficulties. There have been research being done on renewable energy sources like hydrogen for quite some years. He explained about the new methods for storing hydrogen. And he concluded his session by saying that Hydrogen is a strong contender to the generation-next clean and green fuel. And on the next session Er.N.Siva Subramanian,Senior Scientist, Former CGM/ISRO spoke on length on the topic Solar as a Renewable source. He said that Solar energy is a renewable free source of energy that is sustainable and totally inexhaustible, unlike fossil fuels that are finite. It is also a non-polluting source of energy and it does not emit any greenhouse gases when producing electricity.

The second day program started with the technical session. M.P.Nazar, Managing Director, Tantech Engineering Services gave a detailed lecture on Wind power as renewable source and continued with Erection of solar power plants. He said that it is a renewable resource which is non-polluting and renewable, wind turbines create power without using fossil fuels, without producing greenhouse gases or radioactive or toxic waste. Wind power is one of the best ways to combat global warming. In the next session he gave a demo on solar panel assembly & testing. And in the afternoon session he continued with Selection & sizing of solar panels, batteries, inverters and load calculation. The technical sessions were adjourned for the valedictory function. Er. M.K.S SREENIVASAN, Founder & Chairman, Vickram College of Engineering gave the valedictory address. The program ended with the vote of thanks and with the National Anthem.
