A SEMINAR ON “Recent trends in construction technology” (Building lifting technique using jacks method)

Department of Civil Engineering organized a seminar on Building lifting technique using jacks on 25 ^th September 2018. The programme began with invocation.  K.Balaji Ganesh, IV year, Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the gathering and gave a brief introduction about the chief guest Mr.A. Anbil Tharmalingam. Dr. S.Uma Maheswaran – Principal honoured the chief guest who is a registered civil engineer with specialization in Environmental Engineering and building design. The program resumed with the chief guest taking over the diaz.

Mr.A. Anbil Tharmalingam explained about the importance and need of raising building levels using jacks than demolition. He discussed about the cost factor involved in a building being totally demolished and partially remodeled to increase the level of the building. He also gave an idea to the students on how to select an appropriate building to be raised  using jacking techniques and shared   his views on recent research in this field and need for requirement of buildings which should be user friendly, economical, socially relevant and environmental safe.  He even explained about the placement of jacks at critical points, transfer of point loads to uniformly distributed loads with the help of steel channels filled with chips. He also gave a clear view of how the building is raised uniformly feet after feet using the jacks. He showed a video demonstration of house raising using jacks. He concluded his lecture by encouraging the students to become smart people by creating smart structures and use latest construction techniques to sustain in this field. He also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of building lifting techniques.

A questionnaire session was conducted after this, where the students had interacted with Mr A.Anbil Tharmalingam and clarified their doubts on the difficulties and critical usage of jacks in lifting building. Mr A.Anbil Tharmalingam appreciated the involvement of students and answered their queries.Director Mr SR.Vijay Shrinivas presented a memento to the chief guest. R.Leo Franklin, IV year civil department presented the vote of thanks.
