Two Day Training Programme on Power Plant Familiarization

A two-day training programme was organized for the benefit of final year & pre-final year students of Mechanical Engineering & final year students of Electrical & Eletronics Engineering with the help of experts from National Power Training Institute (NTPI), Government of India -- Shri V.K. Sinha, Director, NPTI, Southern Region, & Shri M. Ravichandra Babu, Deputy Director of NPTI, Southern Region. The function commenced at 9.30 a.m., on 30th September 09 with prayer. Our Chairman Shri M.K.S. Sreenivasan, welcomed the gathering. He explained that power is a major crisis that the world faces today. A nation''s prosperity is assessed in terms of per capita power availability. In this respect, Norway tops the list of nations in the world. He added that employment oppurtunities are surplus in the power sector all over the world.

Shri V.K. Sinha, in his keynote address, explained how power sector is a vital industry, which will keep growing in the years to come. It is a sector, where there are quite a lot of openings for young engineering graduates. It is an industry which will never find a decline as in the software – an industry which graduates can depend upon for their career development. He also explained that there are quite a number of training courses offered by NPTI – short-term programmes as well as long-term programmes on Power Plant Engineering. Mostly graduates who undergo these training programmes are placed in comfortable positions with attractive salary and perks.

Shri M. Ravichandra Babu, made a powerpoint presentation about Thermal Power Plants in our country with pictures of their installations. He gave a detailed description of Switchyard Equipments, Boilers, Turbines, Generators, and the Auxiliaries of Thermal Power Plant. The afternoon session was handled by Shri V.K. Sinha. He talked about the boilers and the process involved in generation of power through steam. He drew diagrams and explained to the students the different processes involved in boilers, turbines, generators, and condensers.

On the second day, the morning session was handled by Shri V.K. Sinha, who dealt with Turbines and Auxiliaries of Thermal Power Plant. He explained in detail with diagrams how steam in a state of superheat makes the turbines work. He showed the different stages of process involved in conversion of water into steam in the boiler and the turbine.

In the second sesson, Shri M. Ravichandra Babu touched upon the principles involved in generation of electricity with the use of generators employed in Thermal Power Plant. He showed with diagrams how the turbo-generators functioned.

After the completion of the training sessions, there was a brief valedictory function organized in the conference hall, which was presided over by our Principal Prof. M. Palanikumar. The following 10 students gave their feedback of the 2 Day Training Programme on Power Plant Familiarization.
