Dear Students and teachers and well wishers,

 

We are glad to introduce ourselves as a social organisation wanting to help visually challenged persons through Information Technology and other media. Our one line mission statement is "SEEING THROUGH SOUND". 

We work closely with visually challenged persons and open source communities who develop software and others for the visually challenged people.

Currently there are well developed software in English language.

 

We are interested in integrating/developing similar software/hardware/any tool/device/idea and other help for the visually challenged in Tamil language.

Unfortunately there are not many that we could count on in this field. This is where we need your help.

We are offering various prizes for your project

 

First Prize Rs. 20,000/-

Second Prize  Rs. 10,000/-

Third prize Rs 5,000/-

Special Prize Rs 1,00,000/ (Rupees One Lakh only) for an extra ordinary contribution.

Last date to apply 30-01-2010

 

Last date to submit the completed software and other ideas is 30-06-2010

 

SUPPORTING IDEAS:

*      DEVELOP AN AFFORDABLE ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE BLIND

*      IT MUST BE AN OPEN SOURCE AND A FREE WARE

*      It may be a software, hardware, tool, technique, an idea, may even be a biotechnology or any other technique which will improve the life of the visually challenged

*      It is not a competition to test your skills but to meet the needs of the visually challenged.

*      Your contribution will be recognized with love, affection and with a prize money

*      You can be a student, teacher or any interested person

 

SOME OF THE AREAS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP

*      Screen Reader software by name NVDA which will work in pc is already available @ nvda.project.org

*      Please see whether you can add any other languages apart from Tamil and improve it.

*      Can you make it to work in mobile phones.

*      Text to speech i.e   eSpeak one of the best software available @source forge.net .             IT TALKS

*      Several languages including Tamil and Hindi, the sound is not native you can improve it.

*      The Developer of espeak will help you; we can arrange guidance and coordination.

*      Multilingual OCR Optical Character Recognition software which can convert image into Text with  TTS. It will talk

*      Down load the GNU Tamil OCR source code from source forge.net and study. It needs the following improvements.

The resultant text should be Unicode compliant.

All available fonts have to be added

Spell check has to added

Dictionary function has to be added

Algorithm has to be improved

You can modify it to run on mobile phone

Using training module built in it you can add other languages

Talk function can be added

Any other improvement

 

The developers will guide you

 

 

*      Way finder or path finder

*      Such software do exist using google map and associate software

*      Land mark finder

*      Using  the following technologies you can develop a software or hardware

        Blue tooth technology, R F I D, IR, Laser, Any other sensor technology

*      Voice recognition technology to assist the blind in cell phones and PC s

*      Such technology already exist in window mobile 6.1 version  etc please see whether you add more command tags which are useful for the blind

*      Electronic talking machines like weighing machines, thermometer, length measuring machine, obstruction finder , movement sensors based machines  etc

*      Any other innovative concepts
