Smile Please:)

Smile Please

When you’re smiling…
Does the whole world smile with you?

Smiles must be important: Scientists have so far failed to discover the key to rapid interstellar travel but have invented teeth-whitening strips. No wonder emailers use emotions little punctuation faces or those big yellow smiley faces that tell email recipients, “Just kidding!”. Without the aid of facial expressions rapid communication can be like a blowtorch at a gas station.
A sincere smile is wonderful thing, but it’s a luxury few politicians indulge. A good salesperson knows its value-it’s even more important than the value of the product.
Consider: Our closest animal cousin is the chimpanzee, sharing more than 95 percent of our DNA. And when a chimp shows its teeth, the message is, Back off. According to Aungus trumble’s book “A Brief history of the smile”, the smile, the nerves that make a natural smile are different from the ones activated by a false one.
Smile tend to create their own weather systems. You can do it for particular reason to begin with, but then it tends to be self-perpetuating. Fake it till you make it Behave a certain way and your mind will come around.
And remember when some one makes a disagreeable remark, a smile can help you turn the other cheek. Which in your case would not improve the view. see? Kidding! Hey, where are you going?

WONDERED ABOUT THAT?
1. If Dracula can’t see his reflection in the mirror, how come his hair is always so neatly combed?
2. Why is it that the winner of the miss universe contest always comes from earth?

Anyone for change?

Looking back at a career spanning a decade, I find myself in an analyzing mode. The thought for writing this article stemmed from the one day seminar conducted by the college on “ All Round Developments Achieved Through Advanced Technologies” . Among the myriad of topics presented, one topic with which I could associate myself was the paper on Six Sigma by the students of our college. Having worked in both the manufacturing and the service industry I could not but contemplate to write on the lessons apropos of the past. When the concept of six sigma and 5S was introduced at the bank I worked with, it was met with doubt as it is with any new concept. To the uninitiated, both 5S and 6σ are quality concepts which focuses on organization, cleanliness and standardization ensuring zero service defects and increase profits. People are bound to oppose change even if change is the only way out.

“ Millions of ordinary, psychologically normal people will face an abrupt collision with the future. Many of them will find it increasingly painful to keep up with incessant demand for change that characterizes our time.” (Alvin Tofler, Futurist)

We live in a world of change, yet we act on the basis of continuity. The bank where I worked for more than six years was in qualitative mode after years of gaining competitive grounds by aggression. It was no less an herculean task to implement the concepts of 5S and 6σ at the organization with many fuming on why this, why now? Achieving change of any significance within an organization is in inverse proportion to the success that it has had up to the time that management feels a change is needed. The bank management believed that implementation of quality concepts should be seamless. The Organization Excellence Group (OEG) at the bank ensured that the concept was well endorsed by the employees. The 5S level and the 6σ score was included in the Balance Score Card of the Department and the individual employees. Believe me, after the initial resistance, this has become the way of life at the Bank.

I was wondering whether the same can rolled out at our college. In anticipation of the seminar I was gearing up with 6σ concepts and stumbled upon a link http://www.isixsigma.com. There was an article on “Using Six Sigma to Solve Issues in Public School System”. Speaking my thoughts aloud, I believe that the concepts of 6σ and 5S can be successfully implemented in our college since we are already an ISO 9001:2000 certified organization.

But again why change the existing system? To quote Robert Frost “ I took the road less traveled and that made the difference.” The greater the success of the company, the less likely it is to change. Success showers us with untold benefits but comes with one potential negative that can diminish our ability to stay successful : “COMFORT”.

Sustenance is the key. For that one has to necessarily “ strive for the imbalance” ...bringing change in the way things are done, how it can be improved. Raising the bar after each success. As Dr Spencer Johnson in his path breaking book “ Who Moved my Cheese?” mentioned that “the ability not only to accept change but to create it is a mark of a dynamic individual”

Create change, sustain successful practices...successful organization.

PS: Please let me know your opinions on the above concept.

Tips to overcome exam fear........

Exam fear is something that most students go through before onset of examinations. However, it is important to learn how to overcome exam ...

1.Start studying well before the exam. Make sure your schedule provides for sufficient revision time. As any good test-taker will tell you, the revisions are more important than the first time study.

2.Focus on understanding the concepts rather than mugging. Use mnemonics if rote learning is the only way out.

3.Think about the time after the exam. Visualize the happiness on your face that the stress period is now over. This works very well.

4.Keep telling yourself that your hard-work will not go to waste.

5.If you are afraid of tough questions, it helps to know that most questions are of average difficulty and designed to be answered correctly by most examinees.

6.Designate a "study buddy", a classmate who is an expert in a subject you have trouble in, that you can come to with questions.

7.Get plenty of sleep. It's way more stressful to memorize lots of information or comprehend complicated concepts on less than 6 hours sleep.

8.Eat healthy food, since it's often easier to function on nutritious food than junk. While sugar might be a quick source of energy, sugar lows happen pretty fast and the let-down can often be severe.

9.While taking notes, use as many diagrams, graphs and figures and illustrations as possible. This helps to make several revisions at the last moment!

10.Ask a senior or more knowledgeable person to prepare sample tests for you. If such practise tests are available in the market, go for them.

                       ALL THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overcome Exam Fear.

Exams are a way of assessing what a student has learned during the academic year. Apart from this, it is also a method through which the student's learning and grasping abilities are evaluated and graded by the teacher. This makes it very important for students to learn well, and achieve good scores in the exam. However, for most students, exams bring with it lot of tension, stress and anxiety. The main reason for this is because of increased pressure that they receive from their parents and teachers to perform well in the exams. Although a little bit of exam fear and anxiousness is important to study and learn before the exams, too much tension can hamper the student's ability to do well. Many times, due to exam fear, students tend to forget what they have learned, thus scoring less than they could have. Hence, it is extremely crucial for students to learn about how to reduce exam fear, so that they can give their examination confidently, subsequently earning good grades

•One very important thing that students should remember, is to avoid studying anything new just before the exam. This will cause more anxiety and you may forget what you have already learned.
•It is also important to avoid having conversations with your friends about what they have studied, how much they have studied. This will make you more tense and nervous.
•If you are feeling very tense and anxious, just before entering the examination venue, take a few deep breaths which will help you to relax.
•During the exam, if you get tensed or blank after seeing difficult questions, skip them for the time being and attempt questions which you find easier. Once you have completed them, go back to the difficult ones. In this way, you will surely be able to answer them confidently.

What goes Around comes Around, indeed.

I am back. When I say this,  I remember that I had gone somewhere or lost in the professional world, while otherwise I used to hover around Techie....

That reminds me of a century old adage, What goes Around comes Around. Just like a Australian Boomerang.

I would want to reinforce this adage by letting you know of a True Story that happened early in 19th century in a hamlet in England. (excuse if someone could say it is not 19th but 18th Century- date is not important but the real life incident is :P)

It is always Nice to start the day with a postive real life story....

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to eke out a living for his family, he  heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped
his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could
have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer
Fleming had saved.

"I want to repay you," said the nobleman. "You saved my son's life." "No, I can't accept payment for what I did," the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel. "Is that your son?" the nobleman asked. "Yes," the farmer replied proudly.

"I'll make you a deal. Let me take him and give him a good education. If the lad is anything like his father, he'll grow to a man you can be proud of." And that he did.

In time, Farmer Fleming's son graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander
Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin.

Years afterward, the nobleman's son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin.
The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill.  His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill.

Ya, Someone once had said what goes around comes around.

Is it not a good way to start the day with the inspiring true one. Have a great day.

Thanks

WORLD'S FIRST SOLAR POWERED STADIUM IN TAIWAN

Taking advantage of the solar energy, a new futuristic-looking stadium was built in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, for the 2009 World Games can generate its own electricity. This is world's first stadium to use exclusively solar power technology to produce all of its electricity, having 8,844 solar panels installed on its roof. The solar panels will be able to produce the amount of electricity that could power 3,300 lights along with two giant monitors on the stadium.

Having the shape of a horse shoe, the huge structure can boast a seating capacity of 55,000. Its developers say that the stadium will be used for athletics and rugby events. The design of the gigantic construction is attributed to Japanese architect Toyo Ito. The somewhat unusual semi-spiral shape was designed with the goal of imitating a dragon and offering a "cordial welcome and a cheerful greeting" to all athletes and viewers with its open-ended structure.

According to a Taiwanese official, the solar panels will be able to produce up to 1.14 million kWh of electricity per year, which means a reduction on annual carbon dioxide emissions by 660 tons.
