Importance of Communication Skill

" A writer writes not because he is educated but because he is driven by the need to communicate. Behind the need to communicate is the need to share. Behind the need to share is the need to be understood. "----Leo Rosten, American novelist.

"Since I didn't hear otherwise, I ASSUMED all was going well"..The importance of communication in Project Management.

Take any realms of life...professional , social, domestic one is bound to be awed by the importance of communication. It is like the lubricant for a smooth functioning of a machine. It is communication that differentiates human being from other animals.  No other topic has a multitude of books / discussion on it. But alas ! it is also the least understood one.

In a recent survey of recruiters from companies with more than 50,000 employees, communication skills were cited as the single most important decisive factor in choosing managers. The survey, conducted by the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Business School, points out that communication skills, including written and oral presentations, as well as an ability to work with others, are the main factor contributing to job success.

There was a study on job applications on Monster, an internet site for job seekers. Guess what the single most repeated phrase in the Qualification Requirement was?

  'Candidates with good communication skills'

Almost no exception was made in any job category about the need for good communication skills, in any industry. The most surprising aspect is that none of us are taught any kind of communication skills anytime in school or college. To add to this, it is marked always on a subjective scale. In effect, the importance of communication skills has spread through the society not as an overt requirement, but a covert necessity.

This is what a North Carolina state university sponsored study had to say about the importance of communication skills in work place:

"Communication skills were considered more important than either technical knowledge...or computer skills."

This is the topic chosen for Group Discussion today for the 3rd year students for their communication class. We are looking forward for opinions and views on the same from all who view this.

The need to share...the need to be understood...

Time Management

Time is the inexplicable raw material of everything. With it all is possible; without it nothing. The supply of time is truly a daily miracle, an affair genuinely astonishing when one examines it.

You wake up in the morning, and lo! Your purse is magically filled with twenty-four hours of the unmanufactured tissue of your life. It is yours. It is the most precious of the possessions...no one can take from you. And no one receives either more or less than you receive.

In the realm of time there is no aristocracy of wealth, and aristocracy of intellect. Genius is never rewarded by even an extra hour a day. And there is no punishment. Waste your infinitely precious commodity as much as you will., and the supply will never be withheld from you.... Moreover, you cannot draw on the future. Impossible to get into debt! You can only waste the passing moment. You cannot waste tomorrow; it is kept for you. You cannot waste the next hour; it is kept for you.

You have to live on this twenty-four hours of daily time. Out of it you have to spin health, pleasure, money, content, respect and the evolution of your immortal soul. Its right use, its most effective use, is a matter of the highest urgency and the most thrilling actuality. All depends on that. Your happiness-the elusive prize that you are all clutching for, my friends---depends on that.

If one cannot arrange that an income of twenty four hours a day shall exactly cover all proper items of expenditure, one does muddle one's whole life indefinitely.

We shall never have any more time. We have, and we have always had, all the time there is.
- Arnold Bennet

Welcome Freshers!

Dear First year students, this is the turning point of your life and it will demand your personal as much as your intellectual abilities. Grab this opportunity to discover more about yourself, make new friends and relationships, pursue your career goals and explore new challenges. You may not have your usual sources of support so readily available, especially to the residential students. But you will definitely have the support of your Lecturers, Professors, Non-Teaching Staff and your peers, as much as perhaps the pressure of their expectations.

CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION:CSP REPLACES CSAT FROM 2011

No Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination from 2011-A New Recruitment Process of Civil Services Exam
The examination system of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is updated from time to time to keep it in harmony with the changing environment. In regard to the Civil Services Examination (CSE) ,the present Prelim Test consisting of one objective paper in General Studies(carries 150 marks )and one in the Optional subject(carries 150 marks ) is now being replaced by a Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). This is expected to test candidates on their aptitude and analytical abilities rather than their subject knowledge.
The Aptitude Test (CSAT) will consist of two objective type papers:

(i) Aptitude for Civil Services

(ii) Ethical and moral dimension of decision making.

Both these papers will have equal weightage (shall be like two papers carrying 150 marks each)and will be common to all candidates. At present the prelims consist of two papers: the first is on general studies and common to all; candidates can then choose the second paper from a list of two dozen-odd subjects. But now it is the second paper that will undergo a major change-instead of one compulsory paper of General-Studies and one Optional paper, both the papers shall be compulsories.
The compulsory paper other than General-Studies, will test “aptitude for civil services”. It means testing the ability of decision making without compromising with moral and ethical values. Therefore it is ability of value based decision making instead of taking just facts based decision. It will reflect the candidate’s ability to analyse than ability to memorise.More clearly, it will be the test to sideline bookish candidates. The decision making ability or ability to analyse may be mostly judged from the topics of Public Administration. The moral and ethical aspects, of decision making may be judged from psychological parts like Motivation, Conflict-management, Administrative behaviour, Human behaviour, Psychology of individual as well as Social-psychology to understand crowd behaviour, Management by objectives and so on.
Altogether, the second objective paper may be a clubbed form of Public Administration, Psychology, Sociology, different economic situation, geographical conditions and technologies needed in the areas of security, intelligence, law and order, Revenue in regulating and controlling administration. It is to ensure result oriented civil servants rather than efforts oriented. The profile of this paper, as hinted by the UPSC, will be a very good blend of Public Administration, Psychology, Sociology, Information and Communication Technology, Economy, International deals and Diplomacy.
Finally, there shall not be any change in the Main Examination including Interview in 2011, as clarified by the minister concerned, on the floor of Lok-Sabha. The change in Main Examination will be made after examining the response to changes in the Preliminary Examination. This is, really, in accordance to “demanding life in presented civil services”.

Anand Kumar and the Super 30

Super 30 is an Indian educational program that started in Patna, Bihar, India under the banner of 'Ramanujan School of Mathematics', by Anand Kumar. Established in 2002, the program selects 30 meritorious and talented candidates each year from economically backward sections of society and trains them for the IIT-JEE, the entrance examination for Indian Institute of Technology. Time Magazine has selected mathematician Anand Kumar's school - Super 30 - in the list of Best of Asia 2010.

Anand Kumar was born in Bihar. His father was, as a post office clerk in Bihar, could not afford private schooling for his children, and Anand attended a Hindi medium government school. Here he developed his love of Mathematics. During graduation, Kumar submitted papers on Numbers Theory, and these were published in Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette in the UK. Anand was granted admission to Cambridge University, but could not attend for financial reasons. His father, suddenly died, cutting off the family's main source of income.  Kumar and his mother made papad to make ends meet. Anand sold and delivered this in the evenings, and wrote mathematical theory during the daytime. He also tutored students in maths to earn extra money.

In 1997, Kumar began teaching Maths. He rented a classroom for Rs 500 a month, and began his own institute, the Ramanujam School of Mathematics. Within the space of year, his class grew from two students to thirty-six, and after three years there were almost 500 students enrolled. When one of his students couldn't afford the annual admission fee due to poverty, Kumar was motivated to start the Super 30 programme in 2003, for which he is now known all over India. He takes thirty intelligent students from poor backgrounds, tutors them, and provides study materials and lodging for a year. He prepares them to pass the Joint Entrance Examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). His mother, Jayanti Devi, cooks for the students, and his brother Pranav Kumar takes care of the management. In the past eight years, 212 students out of 240 have made it to different IITs. In 2010, all the students of Super 30 cleared IIT JEE entrance making it a three in a row for the institution.

The above three paras would have made anyone, develop a great, messiah kind of respect towards anand kumar, but Bihar was so corrupt and rotten that even this savior of the disadvantaged was troubled by the mafias of Patna, jealous coaching centers which considered anand kumar as a threat to their business wanted to get rid of him,  he wasn't even going out without his armed guards. A person who had to be cherished by this country was facing serious death threats. The competitors (coaching centers) played it very ugly, they bribed 3 pupils of super 30 2008 to claim that they appeared from their coaching center and not from Super 30, one of those three was the best of super 30, dejected by this betrayal of their own pupils (who enjoyed free coaching, boarding and lodging) super 30 closed their program in 2008, stating students should be checked both in knowledge and as well as in morality, seeing the closure of super 30 the traitors who betrayed super 30, felt bad of themselves and came back to the rescue of super 30, from that point there is no turning back for super 30, it is continuing to hit 100% success every year. Super 30 - Zindabad !!!

P.S

IIT JEE is arguably the toughest entrance examination of the world, A few stats about IIT JEE. 4.7 lakh students will appear from all over India out of which 2.127% students will be selected. Thats a little over 10,000 students. 6 hours, 168 questions, least marks expected to qualify 180+, negative markings lurking around the corner.

Super30 was very much supported by additional director general of police of Bihar Mr Abhay Anand, who taught physics at super 30 in spite of his busy schedule

Anand Kumar has won worldwide recognition now, recently Obama's special envoy praised super 30 as the best institute of india.

Letters to think...

Recently I read two letters one was the letter written to the Prime Minister by a senior journalist and the other was a hypothetical Reply from the PM written by a commoner. Although this communication is specifically between The PM and Journalist, both the letters were actually asking many ethical and moral questions to common Indians like you and me.

LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER …By PRAKASH A BAJAJ

Dear Mr. Prime minister

I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local train compartment which has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse. Mouse at least squeak but we don’t even do that.

Today I heard your speech. In which you said ‘NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED’. I would like to remind you that fourteen years has passed since serial bomb blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main conspirator. Till today he is not caught. All our bolywood actors, our builders, our Gutka king meets him but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple; all your ministers are hand in glove with him. If any attempt is made to catch him everybody will be exposed. Your statement ‘NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED’ is nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate people of India .

Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attack carried out by about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing continues days are not away when terrorist will attack by air, destroy our nuclear reactor and there will be one more Hiroshima .

We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You promised Mumbaikar Shanghai what you have given us is Jalianwala Baug.

Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick out this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi family. Loyalty to Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent people, isn’t it?

I am born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar . Look at all the politician, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray , Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money. Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief minister I have seen. His only business is to increase the FSI every other day, make money and send it to Delhi so Congress can fight next election. Now the clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fisherman so they can build concrete house right on sea shore. Next time terrorist can comfortably live in those house , enjoy the beauty of sea and then attack the Mumbai at their will.

Recently I had to purchase house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI you and your finance minister are not aware of it.. Where all the black money goes? To the underworld isn’t it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time please come to me, I will tell you everything.

If this has been land of fools, idiots then I would not have ever cared to write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side we are reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side you politician has converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, Creamy Schedule caste only what I am not is INDIAN. You politician have raped every part of mother India by your policy of divide and rule.

Take example of former president Abdul Kalam. Such a intelligent person, such a fine human being. You politician didn’t even spare him. Your party along with opposition joined the hands, because politician feels they are supreme and there is no place for good person.

Dear Mr Prime minister you are one of the most intelligent person, most learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR. First and foremost expose all selfish politician. Ask Swiss bank to give name of all Indian account holder. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find wolf among us.. There will be political upheaval but that will better than dance of death which we are witnessing every day. Just give us ambient where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of law. Everything else will be taken care of.

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?

Prakash B. Bajaj

Hypothetical reply from the Prime Minister

Dear Mr. Mouse,

It is finally a relief to be able to hear your squeak in person. I am now convinced that though you are definitely not mute, you certainly are dumb.
I accept the fact that I said “Nobody would be spared”. However, this is a country governed by law, not a dictatorship regime, hence, I can punish someone only after their guilt is proven in court, not based on the squeaks of mice. I might add that Dawood’s guilt is proven and not only is the entire government security apparatus trailing him, but that there is also a red-corner Interpol notice and a reward for his arrest and capture. Also, if you would help me to prove which of my ministers are in cohorts with these criminals, I shall be the first to punish them.

I agree with you when you say – Enough is enough. As long as there are traitor mice in our midst who will sell the safety of the country by offering safe haven to such terrorists, nothing will change. I must remind you that as the terrorists came to Mumbai, they definitely had local support from within – from some of those mice you mention in your letter. As long as such traitors exist, even the most heavily fortified installations are at risk.

I understand that you are born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. I also believe you when you say that corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. However, you must remember that in bribery and corruption, there are two sides – the taker and the giver. Now, ask yourself: Who is the giver? Is it not one of you that’s equally responsible for the way things are? Is it not you that’s paying 30% black money to the builder? Please do not think that I am shirking away from admitting to my share of the blame, but you must realize that I don’t have a magic wand to wave away corruption one fine morning.

You state: Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief minister I have seen. So let me ask you, who was it that elected this “clown” to power? It certainly wasn’t me, you see.

The problem with mice like you is just that you are too comfortable in your arm chair shooting off letters to the PM. How about moving your a** off of the chair and doing something? You keep blaming the system for what it is – how about realizing that you are part of that evil system yourself? How about some action from you? How about a bit of thinking before casting your vote in the next elections? How about saying a firm “No” to the local MP when he comes over to “buy” your vote by offering you free booze?
All of that said, I must admit that our party has made some mistakes. But remember, everyone makes them. There are certain factions in our coalition that have their own agendas and they drag us in a different direction at times. It is at such times that I feel sad in my heart about the fact that though everyone is suffering, no one wants to actually make any change. For example, what did the mice in Mumbai do when the goondas of MNS went on a rampage? They wasted no time in blaming the government for it. If you believe that caste and regional politics is wrong, why would you elect representatives of the Shiv Sena, MNS, RJD etc etc in every election?

Now the choice is yours Mr. Mouse. Do you want to consider the good of the nation or will you keep voting into power the same politicians who keep dividing you based on religion? Are there any men left in this nation of 100 crore people or have all of them become the non-squeaking type of mice? The next election should tell us.

Jai Hind!! Long live the Gandhi and Nehru dynasty!

A difficult World Cup for Europe

English embarrassment, French farce and German angst -- so far Europe's top footballing nations aren't covering themselves in glory at the World Cup. 2010 has been a difficult World Cup for most of the Europe's top national teams which are either underperforming woefully like England, struggling like Italy, Germany and Spain, or packing their bags like France. France's World Cup campaign turned into a farce on Sunday when the team boycotted a training session in protest at the French Football Federation's dismissal of striker Nicolas Anelka for insulting coach Raymond Domenech. And now it’s the first European team to exit World Cup after finishing last in its group. Meanwhile, in the England camp, Italian coach Fabio Capello was quoted as saying: "It does feel like the last two years have been a waste of time. I don't know why or how the players have arrived at this point."England needs a win against Slovenia on Wednesday afternoon to progress to the knockout stages. Given their astonishingly weak performances in tepid draws against the United States and Algeria, an embarrassing group stage exit is looking like a very real possibility. The current champion and a country with 3,541 professional footballers could only make a draw to New Zealand which only has 25 professionals altogether. The next two days will decide whether South Africa 2010 will enter into the history books as a debacle for European football.

Farewell Function on 11th June 10 -- A Brief Report

There was a Farewell Party being organized for the passed-out students of 2006-2010 at 4.30 p.m., on 11th June 10 in the Conference Hall. The Students of 2006-2010 attended the function from the Departments of Civil Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electrical & Electronics Engg., Electronics & Communication Engg., Computer Science Engg., and Information Technology. Our Principal Dr. S. Kathirrvelu made the keynote address, in which he insisted upon 3 Ps – Planning, Perseverance, & Performance, which are the cordinal principles of success in any career. In support of his points, he quoted profusely from Tamil classics in order to make the students get motivated towards becoming winners in life. He advised the students to cultivate positive thinking and to do smart work in order to become successful in their career.

Our Director Sri Vijay Sreenivas advised the students to seek job opportunities in core companies, by developing their technical skills appropriately. He was against engineering graduates taking up assignments in BPO companies. He emphasised that engineers are technocrates, and that they should be technologically well-informed and well-groomed. Upgradation of technocal skills is vital, according to him, in order to shine in the domain of technology.

Several students responded and gave their feedback. They appreciated the college authorities for exploring all avenues for giving quality education and placement opportunities. They were all appreciative of the prevalence of discipline in the campus, and of the efforts being taken to improve the academic results. Some students were all praise for the policies of the colleges, in helping the meritorious students, with scholarships and fee reductions – a significant feature not found in several engineering colleges.

The function ended with the issue of course completion certificates, and with dinner in the mess hall.
