Anand Kumar and the Super 30
Super 30 is an Indian educational program that started in Patna, Bihar, India under the banner of 'Ramanujan School of Mathematics', by Anand Kumar. Established in 2002, the program selects 30 meritorious and talented candidates each year from economically backward sections of society and trains them for the IIT-JEE, the entrance examination for Indian Institute of Technology. Time Magazine has selected mathematician Anand Kumar's school - Super 30 - in the list of Best of Asia 2010.
Anand Kumar was born in Bihar. His father was, as a post office clerk in Bihar, could not afford private schooling for his children, and Anand attended a Hindi medium government school. Here he developed his love of Mathematics. During graduation, Kumar submitted papers on Numbers Theory, and these were published in Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette in the UK. Anand was granted admission to Cambridge University, but could not attend for financial reasons. His father, suddenly died, cutting off the family's main source of income. Kumar and his mother made papad to make ends meet. Anand sold and delivered this in the evenings, and wrote mathematical theory during the daytime. He also tutored students in maths to earn extra money.
In 1997, Kumar began teaching Maths. He rented a classroom for Rs 500 a month, and began his own institute, the Ramanujam School of Mathematics. Within the space of year, his class grew from two students to thirty-six, and after three years there were almost 500 students enrolled. When one of his students couldn't afford the annual admission fee due to poverty, Kumar was motivated to start the Super 30 programme in 2003, for which he is now known all over India. He takes thirty intelligent students from poor backgrounds, tutors them, and provides study materials and lodging for a year. He prepares them to pass the Joint Entrance Examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). His mother, Jayanti Devi, cooks for the students, and his brother Pranav Kumar takes care of the management. In the past eight years, 212 students out of 240 have made it to different IITs. In 2010, all the students of Super 30 cleared IIT JEE entrance making it a three in a row for the institution.
The above three paras would have made anyone, develop a great, messiah kind of respect towards anand kumar, but Bihar was so corrupt and rotten that even this savior of the disadvantaged was troubled by the mafias of Patna, jealous coaching centers which considered anand kumar as a threat to their business wanted to get rid of him, he wasn't even going out without his armed guards. A person who had to be cherished by this country was facing serious death threats. The competitors (coaching centers) played it very ugly, they bribed 3 pupils of super 30 2008 to claim that they appeared from their coaching center and not from Super 30, one of those three was the best of super 30, dejected by this betrayal of their own pupils (who enjoyed free coaching, boarding and lodging) super 30 closed their program in 2008, stating students should be checked both in knowledge and as well as in morality, seeing the closure of super 30 the traitors who betrayed super 30, felt bad of themselves and came back to the rescue of super 30, from that point there is no turning back for super 30, it is continuing to hit 100% success every year. Super 30 - Zindabad !!!
P.S
IIT JEE is arguably the toughest entrance examination of the world, A few stats about IIT JEE. 4.7 lakh students will appear from all over India out of which 2.127% students will be selected. Thats a little over 10,000 students. 6 hours, 168 questions, least marks expected to qualify 180+, negative markings lurking around the corner.
Super30 was very much supported by additional director general of police of Bihar Mr Abhay Anand, who taught physics at super 30 in spite of his busy schedule
Anand Kumar has won worldwide recognition now, recently Obama's special envoy praised super 30 as the best institute of india.
