Annual Report of our College 2009-2010
Following is the Annual Report of our College for 2009-2010, as presented by our Dean Prof. M. Palanikumar, during sports and college day on 1st April 2010.
About Our College:
Our College is a premier professional college, founded and managed by a family of engineers. It is an ISO: 2001 certified instituation. It has a built-in area of 2, 50, 000 sq.ft. There are six disciplines of study being offered: 1) Civil Engineering, 2) Mechanical Engineering, 3) Electrical & Electronics Engineering, 4) Eletronics & Communication Engineering, 5) Computer Science & Engineering, & 6) Information Technology.
There are hostels run separately for men students & women students. Deputy wardens are appointed to look after the interests of hostliers. Mineral water is supplied to hostel mates. There are more than 23 buses, which provide transport facilities to students to come to college from across the length and breath of Madurai city. There are 1300 students studying in our college as of now.
Our college library is quite modernized with a floor area of 4500 sq.ft., housed in the core engineering block. There are more than 17,100 book volumes. There are 26 magazines and 45 journals being subscribed. Internet and intranet facilities are made available in the library for the benefit of students and staff.
In-plant training:
Students from all departments increased their industrial exposure by undergoing in-plant training in reputed organizations like BSNL, Invictus, Railnet Software Solutions, Asianet, Airports Authority of India, Tuticorin Thermal Power Plant, Tamilnadu Electricity Board (TNEB), Sermansys, TVS Interconnect system Ltd., Southern Railways, All India Radio, Mcdonold Electrrical Equipments(P) Ltd., ect.

Students' participations in Symposia:
Students from all departments of our college participated in national level symposia and technical festivals conducted by engineering institutions in the country. Students performed well and won several prizes in almost all events. S.Vaidhyanathan, Final Year Student of ECE Dept. won the first prize in paper presentation competition held at IIT.,Delhi. Special Lectures:
Several special lectures were organized by all departments on current areas of interest in the field of engineering to improve the awareness of both students and staff.
Widely acclaimed computer security Guru Sri Ankit Fadia delivered a special guest lecture on Ethical Hacking on 17.12.09. He is involved in numerous projects pertaining to International security and computer networks in USA. His lecture was blended with live demonstrations.
Training Programmes:
The Department of Training & Placements conducted a series of training programmes for the benefit of students and staff in the course of the academic year.
Faculty Development Programme:
A special 5-Day training program was conducted by Wipro – which was popularly known as Mission 10X, in November 2009. 28 teaching staff -- 20 from our college and 8 from near-by colleges participated. The program was highly useful to the staff. Second-level follow-up program will be held for these 28 staff in April 2010 in our college.
Two-Day Faculty Development Programme was coducted for our staff by Dr. S. Selvam, Director, CUIC, Anna University, Chennai.
For the benefit of new faculty members, staff orientation programmes were conducted.
Student Training programmes:
Numerous Training Programmes was conducted for students on Quantitative Aptitude, Logical & Verbal Reasoning. These training programmes are held not only by our local resources, but also by training companies from Bangalore and Chennai.
Certificate course on Mobile Communcation:
In collabaration with BSNL, Tamilnadu Circle, Anna Univesity, CUIC, Chennai conducted a seven day certificate course in Mobile Communication in the college for the final year studnets from 30.11.09 to 06.12.09. The training comprised of 3 days' awareness programme in the form of lectures by BSNL experts, followed by two day practical exposure programme in the BSNL Lab at Madurai and two days' personalitydevelopment programme conducted by Dr.S.Selvam, Director, CUIC, Anna University, Chennai.The entire programme's financial support was borne by Anna university Chennai. A two day programme was conducted for the final year studnets in the preparation of project reports by Dr.S.Selvam, CUIC Director, Anna University, Chennai.
Placement Activities:
There were 7 recruitment campaigns, which were conducted in the course of this academic year. In the placement compaigns, not only Engineering college students but also arts and science college students had participated. Extra-curricular Activities:
NSS Unit-I was started in the last year. A special camp was conducted in the near-by village for a duration of one week. During the days of the NSS camp, students participated in all social welfare activities, with full vigour and interest. In addition to the above, trees were planted in the Arasanoor village. Frequently, students visit near-by schools in the area and teach the children about reading habits,cleanliness etc. NSS Special Camp was organized in Poovanthi Village from 21.03.10 to 27.03.10 to benefit the rural folk.
Under the aegis of Youth Red Cross, 3 Blood Donation Camps were conducted. In addition to these programmes, AIDS Awareness Campaigns were conducted through Red Ribbon Club, Special programmes were conducted under the auspices of Rotaract Club of our college.
Sports & Games:
State level inter-school football tournament was organised in Dec 2009 . About 16 schools participated. The winner of the tournament was Subbiah Ambalam Matriculation School, Karaikudi, and the runner-up was Don Bosco School, Madurai.
State Level Engineering college Football Tournament was conducted in the month of February 2010. The winner of the tournament was Mariam College of Engineering, Trivancore, and the runner-up was Shanmugam College of Engineering, Pudukottai.
To spread the awreness about Global Warming, a Marathon Race was organized for students, men, women, and physically challenged people of different age groups. Each of the participants was given a T shirt each and a certificate of participation.
