Vikram, Respectful members of our College Chairman’s family, Principals of sister institutions -Vickram College of Education, Vickram  School of  Teacher Training and Vickram Polytechnic  College , Guests & Head of Departments, Dear staff , budding engineers, good evening to all .I feel elated in presenting the annual report for the year 2007 – 2008, It is an year of enviable achievement for our College.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

            Vickram College of Engineering is a premier professional college founded and managed by a family of engineers. It is an ISO 9001 certified institution. This College is located on Madurai – Sivagangai road and spreads over 40 acres. The built up area measures 2, 00,000 sq.ft.In the year 2001, this College was started with the following branches of studies:

  1. Computer Science and Engineering
  2. Electronics and Communication Engineering
  3. Information Technology.

                        In 2002, one more branch Electrical and Electronics Engineering was added to the exciting three. In 2004, two   more basic branches of study Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were started. At present 941students are studying in our college.

 

BUS SERVICES:

          Nine college buses are plying from different parts of Madurai city. Two vans are also operated, one from Madurai and another from Sivagangai. Of the above buses,  one  bus is  exclusively used  for  girls hostel.

HOSTEL FACILITIES:

         Hostel facilities are provided for both boys and girls. Boys Hostel is in the main campus and girls hostel is functioning temporarily at Anna Nagar. Student’s strength in boys hostel is 224 and 64 in the girls hostel. Deputy   warden has been posted for each hostel .Study hour is allotted in the hostel .Mineral water is being supplied in both the hostels.

 

LIBRARY :

           At present College Library is functioning in the Main building. It is going to be shifted to the new building shortly. There are 16000 volume of books available in the library.   Many number of magazines and journals have been subscribed for the  benefit of the  students and staff. Internet and Intranet facilities are available in the library. The ‘New Indian Express’ and ‘Hindu’ are purchased .50 copies”Hindu” are purchased for the hostel alone .Lending and returning of books are done through computers. Library working   hours are extended up to 6.00 pm in all working days.

 

STAFF :

            Each department is managed by a senior staff and well supported by experienced   and qualified staff. Enough  supporting  staff are also available   for  manning laboratories and others.   Necessary  lab facilities  are  available as per the  suggestion of Anna  University, Chennai  and Anna University ,Trichy .At present  there  are 74 Teaching and  35 non –teaching staff    working in our college.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES FOR STAFF:

             Our College administration believes in the empowerment of the members of staff to be well – equipped and well trained.  Hence teachers are sent to Universities and other colleges for faculty development programmes.  The entire expenses for the above training programmes were met by the management.  In addition to the above special training programmes are conducted for staff in the campus.

  1. Induction programmes for the newly recruited staff.
  2. Special lecture by Er.S.S. Manian , Human Resources Consultant.

 

NATIONAL LEVEL SYMPOSIA:

            This year National level symposium INTELECTIUM – 08 was conducted in our College, for two days on 28.03.08 and 29.03.08.  On 28.03.08 Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering departments conducted the symposium.  The Chief Guest and Chairperson of symposium conducted by Electronics and Communication department were Er.Sanjeevi ,General manager -BSNL Madurai and Er.Krishnamoorthy, former Scientist ISRO and now Professor EEE, SACS, MAVMM Engineering College.  Students from different colleges presented 13 papers.  For Electrical and Electronics Engineering department ,Er.Venkataraman Balaji ,Deputy general manager -TVS Cherry pvt Ltd, Madurai was the Chief Guest and Er.S.Venkatesan ,Asst. Prof.K.L.N.C.E,Maduraiwas the Chairperson for the symposium .10 technical papers were presented by students from different colleges.

            On 29.03.08, symposium for Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology departments were conducted.  While Er.S.P.S. Srinivasan, Consulting Engineer and valuer was the Chief Guest and Prof.  S.Nagan, Thiagarajar College of Engineering acted as Chairperson for Civil Engineering Department.  12 Technical papers were presented.

            For Mechanical Engineering Department Er.M.Kumarasamy, Manager Excel Container was the Chief Guest and Er.A.M.Nagarajan Asst.  Professor, K.L.N.CE., acted as a chairperson.  8 papers were presented.  Er.Ramamurthy Prabharan CISA, Raman tech acted as chief Guest and Er.Dr.P.Venkatakrishnan ME., Ph.D., Thiagarajar College of Engineering was the Chairperson for the symposium conducted by CSE & IT Departments.  6 Technical papers were discussed.  The feedback from participants was excellent.

            As part of the curriculum and also to get industrial exposure students are permitted to under go inplant training in the various industries pertained to the course of study for 7 to 10 days.  Almost all the students of final year and many of the third & second year students have under gone inplant training in the following technical companies.

PLACEMENT ACTIVITIES:

We are proud to have made major landmarks in the placement of our students in the course of this academic year 2007 – 2008.We have so far conducted 9 state level placement Drives in our campus for the benefit of students.  The following companies Oracle, Advent Net, Infosys Life Business Projects, Cambridge Solutions Ltd., Sutherland, Energy Infratech Pvt. Ltd & Executive ship – visited our campus.Our students attended nearly 25 recruitment campaigns held in other colleges and in Anna University.  Trichy and Chennai.

We are proud to say that 50 of our students have been placed in prominent companies in India and abroad. The main reason for a good record of our achievements in placement of our students is that we have conducted a series of intensive training programmes at regular intervals for improving the employability of our students. Our dedicated staffs have done their best in improving the Aptitude and Communicative skills of our students.

Several Training Organizations such as RIPE, Radian Academy, SMART, IIHT, CMC, J.Tech, NIIT ,HCL ,MA Foi etc had conducted short term programmes promoting the skills of our students.Our staff in the department of Training and Placement had Participated in FDP conducted by MNCs like Wipro, Infosys and in Teacher Enhancement programmes held in VIT University, Vellore, Loyola College and Anna University,  Chennai & Trichy.

Among the 50 placed students a few names are worth – mentioning:

1)      M. Bhuvanesh of ECE Dept., is placed in three MNCs – Infosys, L & T Info Tech & Torry Harris Business solutions.

2)      D. Rekha of CSE Dept is placed in Infosys.

3)      T.L.Vijayakumar, S.Saravanan & K.Subramanian of Civil Engineering department are placed in Gulf Construction Companies- Eversendi & Proscope.

4)      N.Hmang Chauhan, P.T.Deepak, Ajay Cherian and D.Tharun kumar – all of them are from Mechanical Engineering Department are placed in a Singapore – Best shipping Company called Executive Ships.

5)      R.Nithya, Surajith Nath and N.Vidhushini of ECE are recruited in L & T Infotech and R.Sandhya and N.V.Vaishnavi of ECE are appointed in Satyam Computers Ltd.               

 

STUDY CENTRE:

            Study centre for “IGNOU”is functioning in this college for Diploma holders from this academic year.

 

YOUTH RED CROSS (YRC):

Blood Donation Camps:

Three Blood donation camps have been conducted during this year:

1.      On 9.08.07, 103 students from II, III & IV year donated the blood, in the camp organized by Govt. Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

2.      On 31.10.07 one more blood donation camp was conducted by the Govt. Rajaji Hospital, Madurai 86 students donated the blood.

3.      On 27/02/08,one more camp was organized by Govt. Primary health centre, Poovanthi.  40 Students donated the blood.

In addition to the above ,students are sent to donate blood for the needy people as requested by Govt. Hospitals Madurai District Collector honored our support to the above noble cause by awarding a shield to the YRC coordinator.

Support to the Blind:

A sum of Rs.2000/- was collected from students and donated for Indian Association for the blind.  .

Vaccination Programme:

            Students are exposed to 3 injections one in each month as a preventive measure against Jaundice.  Preventive injection towards typhoid was also organized for staff and students.

 

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

  1. A state level five football tournament was organized at High School level.
  2. Table tennis tournament was conducted at Zonal level for both boys and girls.
  3. In the three – consecutive, years, our cricket team reached semi final berth at the Zonal level.
  4. Our football team secured IV place in the Zonal level football tournament.
  5. Following students were selected to represent Zone – 9 team for Anna University sports tournament.

      6. In the Madurai district foot ball tournament our team secured III place.

 Every year new courts are added for the welfare of boys and girls.

 

ACTIVITIES THROUGH MADITSSIA:

  1. ‘Safety and Saving of Electricity’ programme was attended on 23 Nov 2007 and the copy of the booklet is kept at our library.
  2. ‘Encouraging Entrepreneurs’ programme was attended which was critically started for the Industry and it was to be extended for the benefit of the students in due course.

            Three of the Staff members belonging to Mechanical Engineering Department are doing their research work under Anna University, Trichy.

            I take this opportunity to convey that two of the books titled ‘Prose for Communication’ and ‘Romeo & Juliet’ complied by Dr.A.Shanmughakani, HOD English have been recommended for colleges under Madurai Kamaraj University.

            Finally I thank the administration of our college – particularly our beloved Chairman, Director, Secretary and Joint secretary, who offered their guidance and encouragements time to time for smooth running of the institute, and for their support for conducting various programmes in the college.  The contribution of all HODs, Teaching and Non – Teaching is no less great for the attainment of our educational objectives.  I take this occasion to thank all of you for your whole hearted co-operation and team spirit exhibited by you in the performance of our responsibilities in the field of Technical Education.
