Vikram, respectful members of our College Chairman’s family, Principals of sister institutions Vickram College of Education, Vickram  School of  Teacher Training and Vickram Polytechnic  College , Guests & Head of Departments, Dear staff , budding engineers, good evening to all .I feel elated in presenting the annual report for the year 2008 – 2009, It is an year of enviable achievement for our College.

About the  College

            Vickram College of Engineering is a premier professional college  founded  and managed by a family of  engineers . It is an ISO 9001 certified institution. This College is located on Madurai – Sivagangai road and spreads over are 40 acres. The built up area measures 2,00,000 sq.ft  In the year  2001, this College was started with the following branches of studies.

  1. Computer Science and Engineering
  2. Electronics and Communication Engineering
  3. Information Technology.

                        In 2002, one more branch Electrical and Electronics Engineering was added to the  existing three . In 2004, two   more basic branches of study Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were started. At present 1220   students are studying in our college.

 

 BUS SERVICES:

           Sixteen college buses are plying from different parts of Madurai city. Two vans are also operated, one from Madurai and another from Sivaganagi. In the above buses, two buses are exclusively used for girls hostel.

 

STAFF:

            Each department  is managed  by a  senior staff and  well  supported   by  experienced   and  qualified staff .Enough  supporting  staff are also available   for  manning laboratories and others.   Necessary  lab facilities  are  available as per the  suggestion of Anna  University Chennai  and Anna University ,Trichy .At present  there  are 78 Teaching Staff,  41 non –teaching staff  and   4 guest lecturers working in our college.

 

LIBRARY:

           At present College Library is functioning in the Main building. It is going to be shifted to the new building shortly. There are 17000 volumes of books available in the library.   Many numbers of magazines and journals have been subscribed for the benefit of the students and staff. Internet and intranet facilities are available in the library. The New Indian Express and Hindu are purchased.  50 copies of ”Hindu” are purchased for the hostel alone .Lending and returning of books are done through library Automation Software System. Library working   hours are extended up to 6.00 pm in all working days.

 

SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Tournaments participated:

1. Our college participated in zone IX sports and obtained the following places:

a. Third place in R.L. Institute Foot ball  trophy

b. Third place in  4th  division Madurai  foot ball league tournament

c. Fourth place in Cricket, Foot ball, Kabaddi and Volley ball.

2. Y.D. Raul Yogadev  scored  the  highest goals in A division  Madurai district foot ball championship.

3.Following foot ball  players were selected  to represent combined IX zone  foot ball  team , cricket team and Kabaddi  team:Y.D.Raul Yogadev,Suman D,Antony Michael Raj,Arun Kunjumon,Sundarapandi,Jeyasingam and Muthuvalivitan

 

Tournaments organized:

1. Vickram inter school championship (foot ball fives) at our college Foot ball field.

              Winner :St.Mary’s  Hr Sec School , Madurai

              Runner : Dindigul Hr Sec School.

2. At zonal level, Table tennis tournament for men was conducted.

 

 ACADEMIC COUNCIL NOMINEE:

 Principal was nominated as member of academic council for three years by his Excellency the  Governor  and  Chancellor  Anna University Tiruchirappalli. He attended the first Academic Council meeting in August 2008.

 

 RAOC’09:

 

        On 23.01.09 one day national seminar on “Recent advances in

optical  communication “ was  conducted in this college by the  Electronics  and Communication   Engineering Department. 

Dr. S.Mohan, Vice chancellor, PRIST University was the Chief guest and delivered the key note address. During his address he narrated the development of the optical communication systems in the past.

Dr.Balaji Srinivas a distinguished scientist from IIT Chennai addressed about the application of fiber optics in the field of communication.

Dr. Thomas Lee, Senior   Design Engineer, Fiber optika  Technologies, Bangaluru , who has recently launched a  new  product “Light Runner” explained the  developments  in the  field of optical  Communication.

Dr. P.K. Palanisamy, Professor in   Physics, Anna University Chennai, explained about the achievements in the field of optical communication.

As many as 40 delegates from various engineering colleges and arts colleges attended the seminar. I take this opportunity  to thank HOD, Staff and students of ECE department for the good show.

 

 MADITSSIA PROGRAMME:

 

                                    Our college has tie up with MADITSSIA for mutual

benefits. Periodical meetings conducted at   MADITSSIA were attended by the staff

coordinator, Mr.R.Chandrasekaran and other staff members.

 

NSS UNIT NSS unit  No : 1  was sanctioned in this year. Mr. A.Poornachandran, English Department  was nominated  as the NSS programme  officer. A special camp in the near by village Enathi was  conducted for  7  days   starting  from 1.02.09 to 7.02.09 . During the special camp, NSS volunteers have shown keen interest in the   cleaning, development of village roads and schools. Special lectures and programmes were arranged by the NSS team to the villagers. Some of them are eye camp, blood donation camp, Aids awareness, agricultural development, cattle development, guidelines for loan procurement from banks and Insurance Corporation. In addition to the above, social Economic survey was also conducted in the village

BLOOD DONATION CAMPS:

            It is a usual practice to conduct at least 3 to 4 blood donation

camps every year. Our students are  second to none in showing greater interest and  donating blood for life  saving to  Government  Rajaji Hospital -Madurai, Primary health centre -Poovanthi , Government  hospital -Sivagangai and Meenakshi  Mission  hospital. One special blood donation camp was conducted on 20.02.09 in collaboration with  Anna University, Trichirappallli, Chennai and Bharathidhasan University. About 315 students donated the blood during  the camp. Students with  rare blood group have given  their blood to the  needy patients in Government  Rajaji hospital.

 

RED RIBBON CLUB:

           Peer Education orientation programme conducted by the Anna

University was attended by Mr.  A.Poornachandran, Programme officer and three volunteers. Competition in the theme of “Evils or Abolition of Aids” is to be conducted shortly.

 

STAFF UNDERGOING HIGHER STUDIES:

Four staff members are pursuing their doctoral research and Six Staff members are deputed for their P.G studies.

 

INPLANT TRAINING& INDUSTRIAL VISITS:

In order to enhance the practical knowledge and gain hands on experience, various IPT and IV were arranged for our students to the following places:

Our students attended Inplant Training at:

1.      Tamilnadu cement corporation

2.      Tamil nadu Electricity Board.

3.      Communication Systems     AIR  Madurai

4.      Rail Net  Madurai

Co Curricular and Extra Curricular Activities:

Ample opportunities and guidelines were given for students' participation in the various competitions held at different colleges. I am very proud to say many of our students, not only won prizes, but also brought laurels to the institution in the inter-collegiate programmes. Department wise, the number of placed students is: ECE- 23, CSE- 11, IT- 9, EEE-7, MECH- 4. Thus, 54 students have been placed in this academic year.

  

Finally I thank the administration  of our  college particularly our beloved chairman, Director and Secretary and Joint Secretary, who offered their guidance and encouragements  time to time  for smooth  running of the  institute and for their support for conducting various  programmes  in the college .The contribution  of all HODs,  Teaching and Non – Teaching  is no less great for  the attainment of our educational objectives .I take  this occasion to  thank  all of you for your whole hearted  co operation and team spirit exhibited by you in the performance of our responsibilities  in the  field of Technical Education .
