Book Review - Essential English Grammar.
TITLE: Essential English Grammar.
AUTHOR: Raymond Murphy.
GENRE: Self-study.
THEME: A reference & practice book for elementary learners of English.
Essential English Grammar is an absolute book for elementary learners i.e., learners with very little English. Told so, this cannot be used for a beginner who primarily needs to accustom himself with basic words. The material is organised in grammatical categories such as tenses, questions, articles etc. There are 114 units in the book and each one is on a particular area of English grammar. Each unit is two paged: the information on the left, and the exercises on the right. The additional exercise set at the flipside of the book is a good memory test plan of all the units; however, the author has tried to make it easy by mentioning the unit in which the question fits into. While providing mixed practice for the test, the book also supplies keys to have a check over the answers. An edition without the key is also available for teachers who would prefer their students to use this.
The explanations and vocabulary addressed in the book is made as simple and short as possible. An intriguing factor of the book is usage of apt images which allows the reader to observe keenly and keeps focused while filling in the exercises related to those images. Essential English Grammar is a perfect guide to learners whose grammar is weaker than other aspects of their English or who has problems with particular areas of elementary grammar. This self-study book comes at an affordable cost and it is high time you rush to the nearest book shop and buy the book to fortify your grammar. Sure this would be an easy go way to play with the language.
Happy reading!
