LECTURE ON WELDING & ITS RECENT TRENDS - A REPORT
A Guest Lecture programme was organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the conference hall of Vickram College of Engineering on 27thJuly, 2011. The Resource Person was Er. S.Sankaran, President Indian Welding Society . He gave his presentation on 'Overview of Welding Process and its Trends'. The Presidential address was given by the Principal of the college- Dr. S. Kathirrvelu. The resource person started the session with a brief introduction to welding and explained about the applications of welding. He said that welding has a wider application, as it is almost used in every area, right from the domestic uses to transports, boilers, pipelines, spacecrafts and war ships. He gave a detailed description about the process of welding and its basic requirements.The second half of the session was on recent innovations in the welding process and the job opportunities in the field of welding. He briefed about the challenges and energy consumption factor in the welding process. He gave an overview of joining methods and said that Qutub Minar in New Delhi is one of the finest example of welding of the iron pillar. He gave the historical perspective of welding and said that it has it own history and was started 400 years ago. He concluded the session by motivating the students to explore this area of study. This interactive session was an eye opener for 180 students.
