There was a Common Drive for Selection of Mechanical Engineers for a Singapore-based Shipping Company conducted in our campus on 16th August 2011. Nearly 54 Engineering Colleges were contacted and invited to send their Final Year Mechanical Engineering Students as well as Mechanical Engineering Graduates who passed out in 2011.

 

There were as many as 330 students from 18 engineering colleges who participated in the event. Our Mechanical Engineering Students numbered only 19. Totally 349 participated.

The Selection Process consisted of 2 stages – namely 1) Technical Test(written), & 2) Panel Interview of the shortlisted candidates.

 

The selected students will undergo training for one year at Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Lonovala, Near Mumbai. After the successful completion of the training period, they will work as Junior Engineers for 6 months in ship. Upon completion of Competency Examination conducted by the Govt of India, they will be absorbed as marine engineers on a monthly salary of $3000, which is Rs.1, 50, 000/- in Indian currency. A marine engineer, with 4 to 5 years of successful service, will be elevated to the rank of Chief Engineer, when the monthly salary will be $ 9000, which is Rs. 4, 50, 000/-.

 

Sri Biju Baben, Acting Dean, Marine Engg, Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies made the presentation about the shipping as an exciting career, with several advantages – good pay unparalled in any industry, no income tax deduction, global exposure, wide and varied experiences, opportunties to get quick promotions to the rank of Chief Engineer, liberal leave rules, 3 to 4 months holidays each year, etc. After the presentation about the company, students were administered Written Test on Technical Issues. The shortlisted candidates were interviewed by the Chief Engineers of the Company – namely, 1) Sri Prasad, 2) Sri Upendra Kumar, & 3) Sri Biju Baben. Sri G. Durai Murugan co-ordinated the activities of the placement drive – mostly the conduct of the technical test, & valuation of answer scripts. Our staff assisted him in paper valuation of the answer scripts.

The Final Round consists of two stages – namely, 1) Medical Test, & 2) Psychometric Test(Written Test for One Hour), after which the selected candidates will be asked to report for one year training at Lonovala, soon after the completion of their B.E. Degree in Mechanical Engg.

 

 

There was a Job Fair conducted on 10th June 2011 in our campus exclusively for the benefit of the wards of the police personnel of 4 districts – namely, Madurai, Ramnad, Sivagangai, & Virudhunagar. The whole event was organized by our College Administration in collaboration with the Police Department.

 

The Job Fair commenced with an inaugural function at 10 a.m. The inaugural session was started off by Sri Anil Kumar Giri, I.P.S., Superintendent of Police, Sivagangai. There were 31 organizations which participated in the recruitment of candidates – 10 Textile Companies, 4 Tele-Communication Companies, 1 IT Company, 4 Automobile Companies, 1 Match Factory, 2 BPO Companies, 3 Manufacturing Industries, & 6 Schools.

 

All the 31 Organizations made their recruitment of candidates. Towards evening, 303 candidates got selected by the various organizations. There were some companies, which released their offer letters. There were companies, which made selection of candidates, subject to the final choice to be made in their company premises.

 

In the valedictory function, which was arranged in the evening, there was an Offer-Giving Ceremony in the presence of the dignitaries of our college administration headed by our Chairman & Founder Sri M.K.S. Srinivasan, & the VIPs from the Police Department – Sri M.N. Manjunath, I.P.S., Inspector General of Police, Sri A. Amalraj, I.P.S., Deputy Inspector General of Police, & Sri D. Kannan, Additional Superintendent of Police. There were as many as 57 Offer Letters, which were issued to selected candidates

In Textile Companies, 74 candidates got selected. In Mobile Companies, 57 participants were selected. In IT Company, 3 participants were selected. In Automobile Industries, 106 got selected. In Match Factory, 16 persons were selected. In BPO Companies, 20 individuals got selected. In Manufacturing Organizations, 13 participants were selected. In Schools, 17 candidates were able to get selected.

 

Totally 306 participants were selected. Some companies issued offer letters at the end of the Job Fair in a special function.
