TWO DAY FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ON METAHEURISTICS AND ITS APPLICATION ON 27th & 28th May 2011

In many real life applications, there is dire need to find high quality solutions for hard optimization problem in short amount of computational time. Due to the practical importance of such optimization problems in industries, practitioners and researchers have focused on developing methodologies to state those problems. Meta-heuristics are important class of solution techniques that uses constructive procedure, local search and population-based algorithms to effectively solve such hard problems. Genetic Algorithm(GA), Simulated Annealing(SA), Tabu Search(TS), Ant Colony Optimization(ACO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are widely used among them.

The main objectives of this two day faculty development programme (FDP) is to discuss the details and applications of meta-heuristics such as network design in supply chain management, Routing Problem, Distributed Computing and Image Processing.

Topics include:
1. Introduction to Meta-heuristics.
2. General framework of Genetic Algorithm, Stimulated Annealing.
3. Tabu Search, ACO and PSO.
4. Applications of meta-heuristics to optimization problems.
5. Hands-on working session for sample problems.

He further said “Now onwards the responsibilities on your shoulder is doubled, as on one hand you have to excel in your career and on the other you have duties towards your family members accomplished”. He advised the students to pursue their higher studies and asked them to  Learn while earning. He further said that, Students must work hard to develop their skills and should consistently work with sincerity, which is the key to success.

The Chief-Guest Dr. R Murugesan, Vice Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, Madurai made the convocation address. In his speech he said “It is astonishing to know that you were part of the team that India accounts for nearly one-third of the world's engineering graduates each year and offers a million students the opportunity to pursue technology courses annually".  He further said “India represents nearly 30% of the global annual supply of graduate engineers".  Addressing the students he said “ Believe in yourself. Believe in all that you are, all that you can be and all that you stand for. ” He concluded his speech by stressing on the fact    “ Graduation is only a concept. In real life each and every day you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life".
